Dr. Anastasios Bounas is an ornithologist and conservation biologist with expertise in avian ecology, movement ecology, biodiversity conservation, and ecological modelling. His work focuses on understanding how birds respond to environmental change and human pressures, with particular emphasis on migration, population dynamics, wind-energy impacts, and conservation planning. He has worked extensively on national and European conservation projects and has led competitive research projects combining fieldwork, molecular tools, and advanced analytical approaches. As Principal Investigator of SKYSCAPE, he investigates how birds use aerial habitats in increasingly fragmented and human-modified skies.
Share data / collaborate
SKYSCAPE welcomes communication with organizations, researchers, wind-energy operators, environmental consultancies, and competent authorities who hold relevant information on bird movements, wind-energy infrastructure, or post-construction monitoring. The project aims to build a stronger evidence base for understanding how birds use aerial habitats and how conservation planning can better account for movement through the airspace.
We are particularly interested in data or information related to:
- bird collision records from wind-energy facilities;
- post-construction fatality monitoring reports;
- turbine metadata, such as turbine height, rotor diameter, layout, and operational characteristics;
- search effort information, including searched turbines, search areas, dates, frequency, and survey methods;
- carcass persistence or detection probability data, where available;
- GIS layers, environmental variables, or other spatial information relevant to wind-energy sites and surrounding landscapes.
All communication will be handled transparently and respectfully. SKYSCAPE is a scientific research project and does not aim to attribute responsibility to individual operators or organizations. Its purpose is to improve understanding of bird collision risk, aerial connectivity, and evidence-based conservation planning, while supporting more informed decisions for both biodiversity protection and sustainable spatial planning.
